Position: Motorcycle Safety Consultant Expertise: Motorcycle Training and Safety, Rider Behaviour
Since "getting legal" and gaining a motorcycle licence at the age of 16, Rob has been riding almost every day for the last 33 years. Touring, racing, off-road riding and several years as a courier in London have equipped Rob with an outstanding range of skills and experience that has led to a career in motorcycle safety, rider training and motorcycle crash investigation. Building on the foundation of experience including mistakes from the simple to the complex, Rob has undertaken on-road training from leading practitioners around the world. Becoming a riding instructor for the UK based RAC/ACU in 1984 led to a position with the Victorian licensing authority as Chief Motorcycle Instructor. His responsibilities included licence testing drivers and riders as well as delivering motorcycle safety training throughout Victoria. In 1992 Rob became the authority's Motorcycle Consultant and Chief Motorcycle Instructor with state-wide responsibility for the training and assessment of licence testers and trainers for the VicRoads rider-training program. In 1993 he introduced the Victorian motorcycle licence test, known as the Motorcycle Licence Skill Test (MLST) and was instrumental in implementing the current accredited training and testing system. In 1996 Rob was seconded to Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC) for a period of two and a half years to coordinate a motorcycle case control study involving the investigation of 222 accidents and interviews with over 1000 riders. The study included the inspection of crash sites, with all relevant details being recorded - such as road condition, layout, signal phasing, inspection of damaged motorcycles, and related protective clothing. The investigative nature of the work carried out at MUARC combined with Rob’s extensive knowledge of riding, and in particular, real world rider behaviour, provided a unique insight into the causes of motorcycle accidents. In 1999 Rob formed Motorcycle Safety Services having recognised a need for a motorcycle practitioner with expertise in crash investigation and prevention. Rob joined DVExperts to provide opinion in relation to motorcycle accident causes and rider safety. He has undertaken crash site inspections throughout Victoria and provided advice to riders, municipalities, road engineers and road authorities, both locally and internationally. In recent times Rob and DVExperts have developed an all new objective training and testing system, MOTA, aimed at improving rider safety through high tech rider assessment solutions. He continues to deliver papers both in Australia and abroad and maintains his expertise by riding his BMW motorcycle everyday, as well as training new riders and liaising with a worldwide network of motorcycle safety experts and practitioners. Rob continues to teach and attend relevant seminars and courses. Rob has amassed 23 years as a master motorcycle trainer trainer and gained a notable worldwide reputation as an expert on rider training. Rob's recent work has involved the formulation of training and testing protocols for the United Arab Emirates as well as delivering hands on training in Dubai. Key Areas
