Why "Delta-V" Experts
In the kinematics branch of classical mechanics, delta-v (
) represents the change in velocity of an object.
Newton's Second Law of Motion states that the net force on a particle is proportional to the time rate of change of its linear momentum, which can be expressed (in a simplified form) as:
where the mass is constant. This can be expressed in the more common form:
which forms the basis for our modern understanding of force and it's role in injuries and impact.
In collision reconstruction, delta-v is also used as an indicator of collision and potential injury severity.
