The Age has written about Racing Victoria and DVE's barrier trials following the jockey injuries at the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday:

Racing Victoria Ltd is trialling a section of plastic rail down the outside of the straight six but the inside rail is still the aluminium type used throughout Victoria.

RVL chief executive Stephen Allanson said yesterday the trials of the plastic rails, which began nearly 12 months ago, were nearly over. He said they were being treated as a priority but the problem had been to find a suitable upright to hold the rail because moveable rails were much used in Australian racing.
